Healthy Drinks for Kids

healthy_drinksRead a short walking the supermarket aisle shows how popular sweet drink, and there is no point denying that many children like them. However, there is a point in limiting their intake and to encourage and offer healthier alternatives.

The promotion of healthy beverages – water and milk

Drinking water is the best way to get thirsty, without additional sugar and Kilojoules. Children should be encouraged to drink enough water every day. For easier access, keeps water cool in the fridge and a pitcher of water with a slice of lemon or lime in it with supper.

Reduced-fat milk (except for children under the age of 2) is a good source of protein and nutrients like calcium and vitamin B12, essential for strong teeth and bones. Reduced-fat milk contains the same level of nutrients as whole milk, but less saturated fats. Plain reduced fat milk is preferable, but flavored reduced fat milk is also acceptable. Milk drinks with fruit added, such as smoothies, are a good healthy option.

Reducing sugary drinks

Cordial, fruit juice, flavored mineral water, sports drinks and soft drinks are usually high in a form of sugar. It contains few nutrients and can lead to tooth decay, excess energy (Kilojoules) intake and weight gain. Even fruit juice, a few nutritious, still contains sugar and should be restricted to a small amount.

Tips for Parents :

1. Only soft drinks and other sweet drinks sale occasionally
2. Dilute cordial drink more than usual
3. Use small glasses for sweet drinks
4.  Carry a bottle of water with you at all times when the kids get thirsty
5. Offer fruit, not juice.
